I’m a bit behind in my posts and in my Allotment pickups. I love picking up my quarterly allotment at William Heritage Winery in Mullica Hill. It is close by. They have great wine. We often run into our good friends, Jackie and Rob. There’s even one more thing to love about picking up our allotment there-they include two free flights and a glass each of our choice of their wines. Membership has its privileges!
We had already set out a couple of steaks to grill for dinner, so we did not order anything heavy. Just snacks. Our friends had to finish some work, so we decided to do our flights while we waited for them. That way, we wouldn’t take up most of the table with our wine.
The Wine
My Flight
- 2023 Viognier-A very good medium+ bodied version with subtle lemon aroma and notes on the palate.
- Rose Select-Light salmon in color with more body than anticipated; dry and tasty.
- Syrah-A good, smooth version with full-bodied dark fruit flavors.
- 2022 Proprietor’s Red Blend-An easy drinking, very smooth blend of Chambourcin, Cab, Cab Franc, and Petit Verdot.
- Chambourcin-Deep ruby color and rich dark cherry notes. Excellent version here.
Carol’s Flight
- 2023 Pet-Nat Pinot Meunier-Interesting offering. Pinot Meunier is one of the grapes traditionally used to make Champagne in France. The Pet-Nat version offers a lightly carbonated wine, with the color of a dark Rose.
- WH Select Pinot Gris-a light, easy drinking white with citrus notes on the palate.
- 2023 Petit Manseng-This was a wonderful surprise. I have had this wine a couple of times in Virginia, but I don’t recall any that were particularly noteworthy. This was very good, with nice citrusy aromatics and a nice rounded body with tropical fruit notes on the palate. The grape itself originates in France, while the grapes for this wine were sourced from a nearby vineyard close to the Mullica Hill tasting room.
- 2022 Merlot-A good, medium-bodied version with smooth and tasty cherry on the palate.
- 2022 Coeur d’Est-Another good New Jersey wine paying tribute to the wines produced in the Outer Coastal Plain. This wine is a blend of Chambourcin, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cab Franc, and Petit Verdot.
When our friends arrived I ordered a bottle to share. I planned on ordering the 2022 Merlot, but after trying an impromptu taste recommended by our server, Sean, I opted for their Merlot Reuter’s Vineyard 22. We had enough left to enjoy a glass with our grilled steak. What a nice pairing. I enjoyed their 2022 Merlot, but this Merlot (from the sloping hill directly behind their seating area behind the tasting room) was even better. It had more body and a bolder taste.
