Somers Point Brewing Company is located on New York Avenue in Somers Point. They have been around since 2017. They have made excellent use of their relatively small space (an old garage, with high ceilings, a small bar and a fair number of tables) and a narrow patio with tables, chairs, and heaters for outdoor seating. Arriving just after they opened (2:00), there were only two other patrons when we placed our order for two flights of four brews. I liked the welcoming vibes and the ambience in general here.
Our choices are described below. These pours are numbered in the order that I ordered them, not in the order I drank them. Like wines, I tend to drink the lighter colored and drier brews before the darker, sweeter brews. Also note the clever names for some of the offerings. My favorite name is Tony Martzen (for those too young or not from the area), a play on the old Tony Mart’s Bar and the Marzen style of beer, originating in Bavaria and popular in Germany. It is the traditional beer to celebrate Octoberfest in Munich.
Flight #1
- Third Nipple-Belgian Tripel-Not surprisingly, this was the most potent (9.4% ABV). Well done, with just a wee bit of sweetness.
- Flake News-New England IPA-A very nice NEIPA;hazy with lots of citrus. Creamy mouthfeel; 6.6% ABV.
- Big Fish-Double IPA-High alcohol level (ABV =8.9%) and high bitterness level
- Patcong-Pale Ale-A very good Pale Ale. It was my favorite in the tasting. ABV=6.1%
Flight #2
- Live by the Nickel, Die by the Dime-Porter-A hint of chocolate, but totally dry. ABV=6%
- Tony Martzen-Octoberfest-Not as “malty” or sweet as many I have tasted. ABV=6.1%
- Bay Rat-Witbier-Traditional, easy drinking beer, with a bit of citrus. ABV=5.2%
- Steelman’s Cut-Black IPA-An interesting style, but not one of my favorites. ABV=5.7%
We would definitely make a return visit when in the area. I’d love to try one of their stouts, when available.
Cheers!
My Highlighted New Jersey Wine of the Week
As usual today, I am highlighting a NJ wine that I have recently enjoyed. This week I am spotlighting Beneduce Vineyards Cabernet Franc. I thought it appropriate that I chose a great Cab Franc for today, as it is International Cab Franc Day. New Jersey produces several top-notch Cab Francs. With so many good Cab Franc wines in the state, a case could be made for considering Cab Franc the Garden State’s Signature red wine. This is definitely one of the best.
The Beneduce Vineyards 2018 Cabernet Franc is a smooth Cab Franc with black cherry and blackberry on the palate. It is terrific! Happy Cab Franc Day!
