Mount Salem is an interesting and unique winery. It is unique both in the wines made (primarily Austrian and northern Italian grapes) and the way they serve them. Rather than a typical one ounce pour of a few different wines you can try their “Impromptu tastings” either via a Splash (five wines), a flight (three wines) or a glass – $5 each. They also offer private tastings in what they refer to as their signature experience, served either in the loft of the wine bar or in the library of the winemaker.
As we were on a northern New Jersey whirlwind tour of wineries, we opted for the impromptu splash of five wines: Chardonnay (a very appealing dry chardonnay); Albarino (a light refreshing grape grown extensively in Spain, but gaining popularity around the world); Cuvvee, “Matthias” (a very interesting dry red blend of Zweigelt, Blaufrankisch, and Laurent (all popular Austrian grapes grown here at Mount Salem); Blaufrankisch and a Cab Franc/Merlot blend which was a very nice final touch to our tasting. I must say I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the Austrian grapes that are not widely available in New Jersey and especially enjoyed the “Matthias” blend.
We were fortunate to have the winemaker, Peter Leitner, present to answer a few of our questions. He shared that they grow most of their grapes on their estate, but do source some of their grapes from reliable providers in the state and in Pennsylvania, as well. He shared that they are not part of the Winegrower’s Association so they do not participate in the wine trail festival events. They are a small boutique winery, making quality wines and a few other products (such as the spicy ketchup we brought home).
Though the steps to the tasting room would be an obstacle for anyone with a mobility issue, I am sure Mount Salem would make alternative provisions if you called in advance and shared your concerns in this area. We found Mr. Leitner and the staff to be very gracious and helpful during our visit. I hope to return and do the private tasting in the future.
Been to a New Jersey winery lately? Tasted a NJ wine recently? Tell me what you think. I’ll post it here. Cheers!
